Three things that will stop the job sucking the life out of you

This is how I want my job to look and feel like. But the reality is different. A bit.

I was talking to a woman the other day. She has a good, respectable career that she has been doing for a long time and achieved quite a bit.

There are a lot of good things about my job. It gives me status, financial security, and a sense of accomplishment. I can even say that I like what I do and the people I work with.

But sometimes I wonder at what price do I get all this? In my day-to-day, I feel like I am burning the candle from both ends and if it goes this way for much longer, I will burn out.

And there is one more thing… What is my contribution in the grand scheme of things?

But I guess it is called a “job” for a reason. It is not supposed to be fun…. Right?

Yes! IF you buy into this myth. In this case, it will stay like this for you… well, until it is the time to happily retire. (Yeah, right!)

AND you can totally stop doing it. Right now. Literally.

Below are the three simple steps, the three C’s, that will help you claim your power and change the situation around.

  1. Clarity
    1. Where specifically do you add value in your job? Think only about your contribution, for now, squash “yeah, buts” that will come up. Also, think wider than just the budget, the skill, and the commercial side. What does your presence at work give your colleagues, your boss, the company? Intangibles are not less valuable than tangibles.
    2. What is important to you? Where do you want to get, how does the ideal job situation look and feel for you? What are your non-negotiables at work and in life? What you cannot give up or give in to?

Tip: It might take some time to figure all of this out, especially if you are not used to thinking about such things. Don’t get hard on yourself, just start somewhere and trust the process! You will get there.

  2. Community. When you want to change something, surround yourself with people who have already done this, or are on a similar journey. Share your goals and dreams with them so that they can hold you accountable to your greatness. This will give you invaluable support if things get hairy.

Tip: Your friends and family may not be your best supporters at this stage. They have their own agenda for you and your changes would affect them so you may not have their “buy-in” right away. They will be with you later on when they see that the change benefits you because they love you. For now, you may need a different community to get out of the place that you’ve been hanging around for a while. Having the right Community will help you gain Clarity and Courage that you need to start moving forward.

  3. Consistency. Keep doing small steps continuously rather than trying to move the mountains in one sweep. I used to think that confidence is an inherent trait, you either have it or you don’t. It turns out that it can be created using the following sequence: Courage >> Consistency >> Confidence. Many people who I thought were “inherently confident”, it turns out,  built their confidence by following exactly this simple process. They did it and so can you!

Consistency is the cornerstone of creating your Confidence. [So I guess there are really five C’s that I offer you :)]

Now go and start having fun at your job!

And if you have doubts that you can cover all C’s by yourself, check out the upcoming Fire Starter Sessions group program. It is designed to provide the participants with the all C’s above.

Send me an email saying “FSS'' to get information about the program. You can also schedule a call with me to see if the program is right for you.

To your desires!
